Raw Food Gurus

The following list of Raw Food Gurus is in alphabetical order. Not everyone is included here, you will find your own gurus as you progress in this diet. These are the ones I read and keep up with. I have given my own short description for each and explained how they do or don't work with the boot camp diet. Just because they advocate a different view of raw, does not mean you shouldn't explore their theories and offerings. After you lose your weight, you will need to decide whose method of raw you will follow for your stabilization period. To make an informed decision you need to study, study, study, and sign up for raw newsletters so you can keep up on the science and theories behind this revolutionary diet.

Victoria Boutenko Victoria Boutenko is the queen of green smoothies. On just about every raw web site you'll find a link to her Ode to Green Smoothies. Victoria healed her family from various diseases and weight problems with raw and has become one of the leading experts in the field. All new raw fooders rave about her book, 12 Steps to Raw.

  Alissa Cohen

Alissa advocates a diet higher in fat than the one prescribed here at the boot camp, but her book, Living on Live Food, is written for anyone to understand the concepts and science behind raw. Of all the places I went for information on raw, I felt Alissa's book was the one that described the diet the best, backing it up in terms anyone can understand. It also highlights success stories and will give you are real boost when you start the diet. Others also love the CD. I'll be honest, after watching it I obsessed about food for about 3 days. You won't be able to use a lot of the recipes in the book and CD while doing the boot camp, but don't let that stop you from exploring them.

Alissa also offers a forum and journal area (I actually copied ours from hers because it is so good) that you may want to use for additional support. They are not hard core 100% over there, but they are very informed about raw. Her followers are very supportive and offer a friendly environment to share your raw experience.

Gabriel Cousens If you want science, this is the man to go to. Dr. Cousens is always studying the effects of raw on his followers. At the Tree of Life, they do not advocate high glycemic fruits and do not worry about their fat intake. Cousens' book Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine is a must if you really want to learn about this diet, but can be very scientific at times. Located near my home town of Tucson, the Tree of Life Cafe is a wonderful escape from fast food and franchise restaurants.

Dr. Douglas Graham Dr. Graham works with professional athletes who choose to live a raw lifestyle. He advocates a diet high in fruits and very low in fat. They call his plan 8:1:1 which is 80% carbs, 10% protein, and 10% fat. The diet here at the boot camp is styled after this plan, but allows for a little higher percentage of fat. He is known to answer questions at the VegSource bulletin board.

Frederic Patenaude I have to say, I love Fred. I always look forward to his newsletter. He too follows Dr. Graham's method of raw, but is so forthcoming with information. You feel his excitement for raw every time you hear from him. I definitely recommend you sign up for his newsletter from his home page, then explore his site for valuable information. He isn't afraid to show different points of view, and routinely offers valuable programs and teleconferences to help us learn more about raw.

Storm and Jinjee Everyone loves Storm and Jinjee. They offer a variety of e-books and an exercise CD. If you decide to order the CD, know that it is not a typical exercise video. In it Storm shows you how he stays fit, he does not give you instructions on how to do the exercises, just shows you what he considers a healthy life-style routine. The diet they follow is similar to ours.
