Summer 2009 is going to be big for us here at RFBC. We are going to have our first RFBC Live Boot Camp. You have plenty of time to work up to that hour, so start planning today to join us. You don't have to be an RFBC member either. This Live Boot Camp is designed to help get you started and motivated. What we Will be Doing:

It is Boot Camp ladies. It is about being raw, losing weight, and changing our attitudes for success. Expect to get up early, go for our morning walk, learn some new forms of exercise, hike around the property, learn to kayak in the privacy of our little lake, and brave the cold waters of the lake if you dare. And that is just our mornings! In the afternoons we will be going out to hike to waterfalls, or go river rafting* or go mountain bike riding* or even go soak in a mineral hot spring*.

The evenings we will be working on our food addictions and all the reasons why we fail at diets and/or can't keep the weight we lose off. There may be assignments associated with some of these evening discussions. One night if enough want to go, we will go to the local theater to see a play. There will be some free time, but be ready to work. All levels of fitness are welcome, but you must be willing to push yourself to always do your best and give everything a try. On afternoon hikes we will try and offer an easy and a moderate hike so everyone's needs are met.

I will be bringing 6 inflatable kayaks, 6 life preservers, some far from fancy bikes we can play with on the dirt road, 3 GPS systems, 4 walky-talky's, some workout equipment, and a scale that will accommodate our heaviest woman. And of course, I will be providing all the food since no one will be eating at restaurants while we are there. Those who are paid-in-full before May 15th of 2009 will receive a t-shirt designed especially for this event. If you want more than one or in a different color you will be given the opportunity to pre-order them. I'm sorry because these are being made specifically for our Live Boot Camp, if you pay after May 15th, you will not receive a t-shirt.

Since everyone will be hiking, I will teach you all how to use a GPS system to find landmarks and how to use a compass and topo map to find your way home. For those interested, I will teach you how to identify animal tracks and then we will go out on a scavenger hunt looking for bear, bobcat, elk, moose, badgers, fox, and mountain lion. We can even make casts if you like.

We will also be running Olympic types of events with prizes! And they all won't be about exercise.

I will pick up and drop off everyone who is flying into Durango airport on that Sunday the 5th and departing on the 12th. I will make up to 2 trips to the airport on arrival day and 1 on departure day. We will coordinate times closer to the event. If you cannot meet these trip schedules you will be responsible for your own transportation. Please do not make airplane reservations until this is coordinated through me. If you are planning on driving, please let me know so I can send you instructions.

This is not going to be some huge retreat where everything is served to you. It is basically me with eleven of you in a boot camp setting. The lodge is nice, but it is not the Ritz. Everyone will be helping with food prep and cleanup. No one will be given the opportunity to opt out of anything except optional activities listed below. There will be no hiding in your room with a book, or holding up the group because you have one last call to make. It is Boot Camp. I am not coming as friend or guru, but as Drill Sergeant. My expectations from each of you will be high.

*These are optional events that you can choose to purchase above the cost of the Live Boot Camp. We will provide transportation into town for these events as people sign up for them. Specific times will be set in our schedule, so please don't make reservations, we will do this as a group.

Special Guest Heidi Malano:

Believe it or not, as I was researching things to do in Pagosa Springs, I found out that the 2nd Place Ms. Fitness USA 2007 and 8th Place Ms. Fitness World lives there. Her name is Heidi Morano, and she is excited to come meet us. Heidi isn't all about muscles, she is is about making activity a part of your life. She doesn't live in a gym either. Some of her favorite things to do are hiking, camping, skiing, wake boarding, and mountain bike riding.

I don't usually invite naturally thin women to get involved in camp activities because

they don't understand what we go through. As I looked at the photos of Heidi and read an interview with her, I was struck by how much discipline and sacrifice it took to just compete, never mind place 2nd, in an event like Ms. Fitness.

On contacting Heidi, I was impressed with how eager she was to help out, and how much she appreciated that I appreciated how hard she had worked for her awards. There was nothing pretentious about this woman, and I felt completely comfortable talking about my obesity and exercise issues and the issues I have uncovered from women at camp. The more I spoke, the more excited she became to meet us and help out. I am completely honored that she is going to come meet with us.

One lucky camper will win a one-on-one with Heidi during camp. Heidi is not your average personal trainer, she is a champion when it comes to what it takes to reach physical and personal goals.

. He was a very nice guy, and said the hardest thing for big women was getting on the saddle and then if too big being pinched by the saddle. He thought for bigger women 1 hour would be enough because they might be uncomfortable. He said he works with all sorts of people who have a hard time getting in the saddle and would be very accommodating.

There is a duathon going on in Pagosa Springs on Saturday, July 11th. It is a 6 mile run and and a 11+ mile mountain bike ride. If any would like to compete let me know. Depending on our schedule, we may as a group volunteer to help out. There is nothing more motivating than being involved with athletic events that are not so far from our reach.

Pagosa Springs and Endaba Lodge offers everything I was looking for in our first Live Boot Camp:

  • Privacy so no one is self-conscious about playing in the water or exercising outside.
  • Lots of private trails to hike on where no one can see us stop for breath.
  • A lot of bathrooms and a large communal area in the house.
  • There is a lot to do in town, so even though I know everyone is aching to be with me face to face 24/7, we all may need a fun break and experience some wild waves on the river or just a soak in a hot spring.
  • This is our very own private 7 acre lake surrounded by hundreds of acres of nothing. No one will have to spend a moment self conscious about anything while we are working out and playing hard here.

You can be obese, you can be a beginner at everything, but you can't be a quitter.
This is Boot Camp ladies. Wusses need not apply!
